School of Sanctuary

Welcome to Merridale Primary School

School of Sanctuary are committed to creating a culture of welcome and inclusion for refugees and people seeking asylum. At Merridale Primary School, we are currently working towards accreditation as a School of Sanctuary.

Our school values of respect, resilience, kindness, aspiration, creativity and curiosity are at the heart of all we do and ensure that we create a school community where everyone is welcome and valued. Our curriculum reflects the diverse community we serve ensuring that all children can see themselves in their learning.

Each year we support a chosen charity. This year children voted to support Refugee Action, a national charity supporting refugees across Britain. So far this year, children have raised money through a Christmas jumper sale, a bulb sale, and our annual lantern display. Refugee Action have held a whole school assembly to share the work they do with us.

We have a team of twelve Young Interpreters who have all received six training sessions helping to support new arrivals to our school. These children applied for the role, considering why they would be an effective Young Interpreter. In addition, year 5 children get the opportunity to train to be peer supporters so that they can support children at lunchtime, ensuring  that all children are happy and included.

We will share updates on our progress towards School of Sanctuary accreditation on school newsletters and on our twitter feed.
